What is it all about?

Coronaviruses are a group of viruses that have been found in both humans and animals, and usually cause mild respiratory infections. In December, cases of pneumonia, identified as the cause of a new coronavirus, COVID-19, were found in China, but in many ways are very influenza-like.

Transmition

Coronavirus is primarily transmitted as a droplet infection when the patient coughs or sneezes. It is possible that the virus is also transmitted through contact. Coronaviruses do not survive on surfaces or in the air for days. No transmissible infections have been detected. The incubation period is 2 to 12 days, with an average of 4 to 5 days.

Danger

According to the report, approximately 81% of reported cases were mild to normal, 14% reported pneumonia and / or dyspnoea, and approximately 1.4 % (WHO updated on 6. March) of the patients have so far died from their disease, the vast majority of whom are elderly men with some underlying disease. In comparison: The mortality rate in the SARS epidemic was over 10%.

According to the WHO, 80% of those infected with coronavirus survive without medical treatment. Some get infected but do not have symptoms and do not feel sick. In patients with mild symptoms, the disease has healed within 2 weeks. The recovery time for those suffering from severe and critical symptoms is 3-6 weeks.

Prevention

Coronavirus infections are prevented in the same way as other respiratory tract infections. Good hand hygiene should be a priority. Wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, or use alcohol-based hand rinse. Do not touch your eyes, nose or mouth unless you have just washed your hands.

Symptoms

Fever, cough, shortness of breath, myalgia and fatigue. If you suspect that you have been dealing with a person who may be suffering from a viral infection and that you develop fever and respiratory symptoms within 14 days of the appointment, contact your local health center, occupational health care or emergency medical service first. There you will find instructions on how to seek treatment.
